How Skeptical Podcast and Murder Creek Media Uncover the Unthinkable

Small Business Success Stories: by Neeli Faulkner, founder of Murder Creek Media
What started as one woman’s curiosity turned into a powerful podcast and a justice-focused media company. Through Skeptical and Murder Creek Media, she’s helped uncover new evidence in wrongful conviction cases, proving that persistence, storytelling, and truth-seeking can change lives—and even the justice system.
Six years ago, I embarked on a journey that would change my life in ways I never imagined. What began as a personal interest in investigating a claim of wrongful conviction quickly turned into an all-consuming passion. At the time, I had no formal background in journalism or law – just a deep sense of curiosity and a belief that the truth mattered.
I stumbled across the story of Daniel Blan, an Alabama man who had been convicted of murdering his adoptive father back in 1994. Daniel was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. With no physical evidence linking Daniel to the crime, he has maintained his innocence since his conviction in 1996.
As I dove head first into Daniel’s case, combing through trial records, conducting witness interviews, and analyzing evidence, I uncovered inconsistencies that had been overlooked. I knew I had to share what I found, not just with the legal community but with the public. That realization led to the creation of Skeptical: An Investigative Podcast and the birth of Murder Creek Media.
Through Skeptical, I was able to unearth new evidence in Daniel’s case that is now being used in post-conviction appeals for both Daniel and his co-defendant who may, in fact, be innocent. The impact of this work extends beyond the podcast itself. My investigations have not only provided hope to those who may have been wrongfully convicted but have also challenged the justice system to take another look at cases that may have been mishandled.

“The opportunity to help those who have been silenced by the system has given me a profound sense of purpose.“
I founded Murder Creek Media as a way to create and market podcasts that tackle real-world issues. Through this company, I aim to amplify voices that might otherwise go unheard, shedding light on wrongful convictions, cold cases, and systemic flaws that demand attention.
The journey has truly transformed my life. What started as a hobby has become my mission, together with my volunteer team of eight other women. I have learned that one voice, armed with persistence and a commitment to truth, can make a tangible difference. The opportunity to help those who have been silenced by the system has given me a profound sense of purpose. I am honored to continue this work, and I am grateful for the support that allows me to pursue justice, one story at a time.
