Business Description
The SyFy Sistas, Inc is where science fiction meets Afrofuturism.
The SyFy Sistas are four sistas with one vision, to make Black science fiction and fantasy a part of the mainstream. Subrina Wood and Fran Taylor met in 2019 in a Star Trek Discovery FB group. They were frustrated by the negativity from Trek fans toward the new show starring Black actor Sonequa Martin-Green. They vowed to create a space where Black science fiction and fantasy could be discussed, promoted, and appreciated by anyone. At AwesomeCon in Washington, DC, Tamia Harper joined Fran and Subrina after an equally frustrating panel on Star Trek Discovery. They couldn’t discuss the new lead character of the show Michael Burnham or her portrayal by the incredible Sonequa Martin-Green. Yvette Blackmon Tom was an early supporter of the SyFy Sistas FB page and attended multiple events. Listeners quickly noticed the SyFy Sistas’ brand of incising critiques, intelligent recaps, and thought-provoking comments. Their energy and evident love of science fiction made the Trek Geek Podcast Network extend an invitation to join the roster within a month of launching the first show.
Since then, it’s been their mission to make Black science and fantasy part of the mainstream conversations of geeks, nerds, and Trekkies by exploring sci-fi movies, books, comics, TV series fiction from a black female point of view.
