Business Description
The Nexus Institute for Translational Research, Inc. (NITR) is a nonprofit scientific organization founded in February 2026 in New York City, with a 501(c)(3) application currently pending with the IRS. NITR bridges the gap between laboratory discoveries and real-world health impact by accelerating the translation of infectious disease research into public health solutions. Our work spans host-pathogen interactions, antimicrobial resistance, emerging infectious diseases, and evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies — all grounded in rigorous, community-engaged science.
At the heart of NITR is a commitment to health equity and the empowerment of women scientists. We create equitable pathways for women at every career stage — from high school students exploring STEM to established researchers leading transformational projects — through mentorship programs, collaborative networks, grant writing support, and career development resources. NITR was born from the personal journey of Founder and President Dr. Maika G. Mitchell, who grew up as a homeless teenager in New York City and went on to build over 20 years of experience in biomedical research, clinical operations, and health equity advocacy. Her story — and her belief that every young woman deserves a chance to pursue science — is the foundation of everything NITR does. We’re building the infrastructure, mentorship networks, and funding pathways that didn’t exist when she needed them most.
NITR also advances global health equity through community-based participatory research, health systems strengthening in underserved populations, and capacity building in low- and middle-income countries. We partner with academic institutions, healthcare systems, and policymakers to ensure our research findings reach the practitioners and communities that need them most. Whether through our youth pilot programs, small grants initiatives, or advisory network of leading public health experts, NITR is committed to creating a world where infectious disease research rapidly transforms into life-saving interventions — and where women scientists have equal access to resources, funding, and leadership opportunities.
