Founder's Story

My name is Myiesha Speight and I've been knitting and crocheting off and on since elementary school. I have always loved making things, so it seemed obvious in hindsight that I turn my love of making things into a business. When I decided to pursue this as a business, I had been laid off and wanted to focus my energy on something that made me feel better. I found a pattern for an amigurumi bunny and immediately fell in love with amigurumi, a popular Japanese art of knitted and crocheted yarn figures. Even before I finished making the bunny, I knew I would never stop making plushies and crafts and would soon run out of space to store them, so selling them and turning this in a business was the answer. I want to share the comfort I found through making plushies with other people. I hope they can be both a cute figure on display as well as a source of comfort on a bad day -- something that makes people smile and feel a little better.

Business Description

My business, Myami Plushies specializes in handmade knitted and crocheted plushies and yarn crafts. Myami (pronounced my-uh-me) is a combination of my nickname Mya and Ami, the Japanese word for knitted or crocheted.There are several offerings under the Myami Plushies umbrella that I’m excited to share. The first, Myami Academy, is where I, using my 15+ years of experience, will teach you knitting and/or crochet so you can make 2-3 simple projects. If you have always wanted to learn how to knit or crochet or maybe you used to know how to and now need a refresher, then Myami Academy is for you. Next up is Myami Shop where you can buy any one of our adorable plushies. They’re perfect as a graduation or birthday present, home or room decoration or as a way to say “I’m sorry you’re not doing well, but I’m thinking about you and I hope you feel better.”

Maybe you’ve perused the shop’s plushies and you want something a little different, something that better matches your tastes. You’re in luck because we take custom orders. Through our last offering, Myami Customs, you can get the shop’s plushies in your favorite color or yarn type. Or you can commission me to make a plushie of your choosing.
