Founder's Story

Divine Refuge Center, Inc. was founded by Karen Barnes, whose life has been shaped by resilience, faith, and a commitment to helping others. Diagnosed with HIV in 1986, Karen experienced firsthand the mental, physical, emotional, and social challenges that often accompany an HIV diagnosis. Throughout her journey, she discovered that healing requires more than medical care it requires hope, support, dignity, and a community that understands. After living with HIV for nearly 40 years, Karen transformed her personal experience into a mission to serve others. Her vision led to the creation of Divine Refuge Center, Inc., a faith-based nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the lives of people living with HIV and other life challenges through proven therapies and supportive services that nurture the mind, body, and soul. Today, DRC stands as a testament to the belief that a diagnosis does not define a person's future. Karen's goal is to help individuals find healing through holistic care.

Business Description

Divine Refuge Center, Inc. (DRC) is a faith-based client resource center dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals living with HIV. Founded on the belief that true healing involves the mind, body, and soul, DRC provides access to holistic services designed to support the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being of those facing the challenges associated with HIV. Our services include Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Sweat Therapy (exercise and fitness programs), Therapeutic Massage Therapy, Hydrotherapy, HIV and Substance Abuse Counseling, and Nutrition and Diet Counseling. Through these evidence-based and supportive therapies, we strive to empower individuals to live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

At DRC, we understand that living with HIV can affect much more than physical health. Depression, anxiety, isolation, and suicidal thoughts have long been associated with this chronic disease, making mental health support an essential component of care. We recognize the importance of early mental health screenings, interventions, and ongoing support services that help individuals build resilience, confidence, and hope. Our goal is to create a safe and welcoming environment where clients are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect while receiving the resources they need to overcome life’s challenges.

In addition to direct services, DRC believes that collaboration is key to creating lasting change. We have built a coalition of community organizations, healthcare providers, advocates, and service agencies that share a common commitment to combating HIV and improving community health outcomes. By combining resources, expertise, and community networks, we strengthen our collective impact and expand access to critical services. Through partnership, education, advocacy, and holistic care, Divine Refuge Center, Inc. is working to create healthier communities and restore hope for individuals and families affected by HIV.
